presented by WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble
WVC JAZZ: WVC, Malaysia’s premier jazz
ensemble, returns with a series of concerts entitled Music In Words. The show,
spanning a series of five concerts over three nights, will feature a unique
collection of WVC’s exhaustive repertoire each day.
On August 23rd, WVC presents their first ballad
and love song concert, featuring new compositions, new arrangements, and also
some of the favourites WVC has come to be known by. Featuring Chong KeatAun and
August 24 will feature the return of a pioneer
project by WVC, Listen to the Wind Sing: Murakami and Jazz. This show will
include original works composed by bandleader Tay Cher Siang, drawing
inspiration from his avid connection with Murakami’s works since being a
teenager. The show will also feature WVC’s interpretation of some of the music
Murakami himself quotes and draws inspiration from in his works.
The show will begin with an 11am movie screening
of the film Burning, a South Korean psychological drama inspired by one of
Murakami’s short stories from The Elephant Vanishes. Burning was the first
Korean movie to make it to the 91st Academy Awards shortlist for Best Foreign
Language Film and has garnered attention in film festivals all over the
Later in the day WVC will take the stage with
their music with accompanying narration by Ye Hui, translator and researcher of
Murakami's works. This Chinese language version showcasing will be at
3pm, and an English counterpart at 8pm, featuring reading and narrations by
Gareth Richards and Bettina Chuah Abdullah of Gerakbudaya and Hikayat.
Then on August 25th, WVC once again presents yet
another pioneering project entitled If Music be the Food of Love, Jazz On! In
2016, on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, WVC embarked on a
journey to create a swathe of musical works inspired by the bard. Putting music
to sonnets, creating music inspired by evocative scenes from some of
Shakespeare’s most famous plays, WVC staged a highly acclaimed show in KLPAC
and is set to bring this series of music to the stage once more.
Joining them are Lim Soon Heng of Shakespeare
Demystified, and Aaron Teoh who is taking a break from his stint with the
London production of The King and I.
