SD: A Midsummer Night's Dream premiered at penangpac and klpac in February 2020, and scored success with audiences who roared with laughter. There is not a dull moment in the 100-minute long show. The lockdown prevented it from touring, but now with schools and theatres reopening, we are bringing back this much-loved show.
In the production, six male actors play all roles, deploying also puppets and masks. Together they create the play’s three worlds: the realm of the court and the young lovers; the magical and dream-inducing forest of spirits and fairies; and the pragmatic world of the down-to-earth but comic Mechanicals.
Helming the whole production is Lim Kien Lee, the artistic director and co-founder of KL Shakespeare Players. “KLSP has chosen A Midsummer Night’s Dream because it was the one that kick-started the idea of forming our own local Shakespeare company. In 2010, Jeff Kevin from Australia, with Malaysian actors, directed his take of this work. By staging this in 2020, we commemorate him, our fellow actors who were part of it, and our lineage.”
Since 2011, KL Shakespeare Players have made the Bard fun and accessible to audience all over Malaysia through its unique Shakespeare Demystified series - condensed versions of Shakespeare's work featuring canonical scenes, in Shakespeare’s language, stitched together with a narrative glue in contemporary English and a sprinkling of our vernaculars.
