OLD LEAR presented by KL Shakespeare Players
"Old Lear" explores and reimagines the characters and themes in Shakespeare’s "King Lear."
And through the words and perspectives of these characters, the production examines the struggles of human desires in an uncertain universe, perhaps void of meaning. Through the spirit of ‘play’, "Old Lear" seeks, from the original play, new distilled and heightened complex expressions.
First performed in 2019, as part of the 12th KL Butoh Festival, "Old Lear" (2022) has, with a slightly changed cast, been revisited, reimagined, and reworked. The production will now also be in Malay, Mandarin and Cantonese, on top of English; it incorporates movement and elements from Chinese theatre, and contemporary and Malay heritage. Later in June, KL Shakespeare Players (KLSP) will also be taking this production to Milan, Italy to compete in an international theatre event at Spazio Teatro NO'HMA. This is our second invitation since earning 'Mentione Speciale' in 2020.
