HOW TO BE ALONE
presented by Ghafir Akbar & Joel Waage

JO KUKATHAS stars in a workshop performance of a new play dealing with solitude, grief, and making sense of what it means to be alone.

SYNOPSIS
We are inherently communal beings. A lack of social interaction is detrimental to the psyche, and deprivation of physical contact fuels anxiety. Why then do we crave solitude? Why are recluses seen as pariahs and hermits looked upon with fear?

Do you feel lonely when you’re alone, or does loneliness set in when you're surrounded by people who don’t understand you?

Two people traverse their individual relationships with isolation and look to the sky, the land, and the sea to learn HOW TO BE ALONE.

An Astronomer finds herself alone for the first time after the death of her husband. Undeterred, she embarks on a solo journey halfway around the world to witness the solar eclipse.

Elsewhere, a Young Man emerges from the woods for the first time after a decade of living alone in the wilderness. He stares into the void of the internet to find companionship in a world he no longer understands.

They explore a world of hermits and recluses, eclipses and tides, singing whales and talking plants, and valuable instructional videos on how to survive living in the woods by yourself. A theatrical journey through time and space, with each actor performing in a separate geographical location. Are they alone or are they connected through their mutual loneliness?

This workshop production features a live performance by Malaysia’s award winning actress, Jo Kukathas, featuring American actor Danny Jones in a virtual performance. An intercontinental workshop performance of a new play written in collaboration with Ghafir Akbar, Danny Jones, and Joel Waage.

The lockdown has forced theatre artists to remain in solitude, a state antithetical to collaborative creativity.

This project stems from a series of conversations between GHAFIR AKBAR and JOEL WAAGE, a New York-based director and dramaturg; these conversations were reflective of our mental states throughout the pandemic, and became the inspiration for a transcontinental work that aims to combine theatrical composition, heightened visual style and digital technology to explore themes of solitude, loneliness, and exile.

HOW TO BE ALONE is a transcontinental collaboration between Malaysia and the United States. Written by Malaysian Actor/Director Ghafir Akbar, and US based director/dramaturg Joel Waage and actor Danny Jones. It is produced by Melissa Teoh.

HOW TO BE ALONE is supported by Cultural Economy Development Agency (CENDANA), under its Performing Arts Presentation Funding Programme.
