 DPAC Arts Festival 2016
DUA Creations  by DPAC Dance Company
Watch a new contemporary dual-dance, by German choreographer, Ben J. Riepe and DPAC Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Wong Jyh Shyong

As a choreographic workplace, DPAC Dance Company (DDC) aims to present DPAC’s in-house dance productions – “D for Dancing” with local artists and collaborative projects between Malaysian and international dance artists. In 2015, DDC was awarded the Best Group Performance for Cut the Clouds at the 12th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards 2015.

Choreographed by Ben J. Riepe (Germany)
Dramaturge: Felizitas Stilleke Kleine M.A.
Lighting Design: Tan Eng Heng
Costume: Quito Yang
Set Design: David Wong

In the collaboration with Goethe-Institut Malaysia, Ben was invited to be DPAC Dance Company’s guest resident choreographer. Together with his dramaturge, Felizitas Stilleke Kleine, they immersed themselves in the unique breadth and depth of the Malaysian environment in a 4-week residency with DDC to create a new original piece titled HAHAHA with DDC dancers.

In HAHAHA, Ben J. Riepe focuses on the universal language of laughing, on which the intense dialog between the six dancers and the audience is based. The moments of infection and transition are becoming the main atmospheres of this choreography - of keeping and loosing the countenance! Within this performative etudes about the sounding relationship between the human body and the individual voice, Ben J. Riepe composed a symphony of laughter. Out of one single and trivial sound, variations of meanings and faces are conquering the space and our minds. As a joy. As a cry. As a play.

About Faces
Choreographed by Wong Jyh Shyong (JS)
Music Composer / Live-electronic Musician: Tee XiaoXi
Live Music Performed by Silence Ensemble
Lighting Design: Tan Eng Heng
* The creation is advised by Ben’s dramaturge, Felizitas.

Faces is JS Wong’s a new work that contemplates the identity of one’s body culture. The creation looks at life and culture, where a contemporary lifestyle leads to a complex form of self-identity which is commonly shared in South East Asia: a mixture of one’s self and others, now and then, contemporary and traditional, East and West, and the extent of alienation and togetherness. Inspired by the use of contemporary and traditional masks in performing arts, the dancers cover and uncover their faces of identity, and deconstruct their dancing bodies as a way of communicating with oneself.
