DPAC Live: A new theatre experience born out of extraordinary times

‘Reflections’ is HANDS taking stock of ourselves and our past and using all of that to move forward the best way we know how - through our art…..

Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) is launching our new format for live theatre: DPAC Live, a cross-sectoral effort to revitalize the way we share and consume the arts. With collaboration between DPAC, artists, a filming team, and Cloud Theatres, we aim to share live broadcasts of on-stage performances with you through your screens. Staying true to DPAC’s belief that the “arts brings people together”, we hope that these live broadcasts and its much lower ticket prices will bridge the gap between the arts and the public.

On 18 July, DPAC Live brings you Reflections by Hands Percussion. Together, let’s find hope in the arts and hope in the midst of this pandemic.

DPAC Live:

‘Reflections’ is HANDS taking stock of ourselves and our past and using all of that to move forward the best way we know how—through our art. Our art form thrives on the beats and rhythms we create, which resonate deep within us. It speaks of our individuality, personalities, and strength as a team.

About The Show:
After being closed for five months, Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) reopens our doors once again to usher in our first live stage performance, The Meeting.

The Meeting will be held at DPAC on 22 and 23 August, 2020. Following the success of our last online live broadcast, The Meeting will be made available through a live broadcast and a live stream in addition to the stage performance.

The line-up will be made up of 7 outstanding young Malaysian musicians: Sara Heng on Guzheng; Jimmy Chong on drums; Alena Murang on vocals & Sape’; Sylvester Liew on keys; Joshua Maran & Jonathan Wong on guitar; and Herman Ramanado on bass.

The Meeting, as the name implies, brings together diverse music influences—where East meets West, modern meets traditional, as world and experimental genres constantly permeate and create unique chemistry. This experience at The Meeting would like hopping on a train ride to the future, whereby at each stop we encounter musical worlds that are different and transcendent.

In addition to classical Chinese, Western, world, and experimental music, The Meeting recruits the talent of Sape’ player Alena Murang, who will interweave her Sarawakian heritage into this medley of genres.

Ivory Series introduces a brand new show titled ‘The Boutique Of Dreams’. This collaborative piece brings together the elements of piano, paper, poetry and videography to inspire a dreamlike experience.

Featuring the immense talents of classical pianist Mei Lin Hii and critically acclaimed actor Ghafir Akbar, music from the early Baroque to 20th-century minimalist is paired with the contemporary writing of Georges Perec and the lyrics of Bob Dylan to fill an auditorium with the conscious and unconscious. Interpretations of the realms of imagination and reality are created from immersive visuals, through combining an installation by paper artist Anne Dé with the conceptual designs by videographer Arnaud Blondel. Virtual dreams weave through space and sound to capture glimpses of a heightened vision of music and poetry.

Featured works include Art of the Fugue Contrapunctus 1 & 2 by J.S.Bach, Clair De Lune by Debussy, 124 Dreams by Georges Perec, Etudes by Philip Glass, Not Dark Yet by Bob Dylan and more.

COLOUR OF VOICES IN CONCERT

What we see through our eyes we call “colour”. But can the music we hear be attributed as “colours” as well?

Colour of Voices is an a capella group with members made up of diverse races from Malaysia. They are from different cultural backgrounds and speak three different languages, but rather than make these differences a barrier, Colour of Voices embodies the spirit of unity through music.

This coming Malaysia Day, Colour of Voices will bring their first a capella concert to Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC). With voice as their only instrument, they give a unique spin to music familiar to all Malaysians. According to them, “We are not only learning a new language, but also embracing the beauty of its culture and tradition. Hence, it makes us proud to have been brought up in Malaysia, the land with multiple races and cultural diversity.”

As Malaysians, how can we possibly miss Colour of Voices’ first ever concert?

Inspired by his life's experiences and encounters, Lim Wei Siong shares with us his "Journey". Here, the erhu and pipa master seeks to address all the big and little aspects of life in hopes of finding some meaning in them.

JOURNEY

If the glowing pearl is earth’s rare gem, then Lim Wei Siong must be the glowing pearl of the performing arts industry.

There are not many masters who are proficient in both the erhu and pipa. Initially, while learning, Wei Siong himself said that he was confused by the two instruments. But after 30 years, he is surprised to see how far the erhu and pipa have come with him.

For Wei Siong, the process of playing these instruments is a lot like the ups and downs of life, the journey frustrating and never smooth, but, like with life, you go on. His memories of them are so bittersweet that he has come to cherish them.

Through his travels, he finds inspiration, which he largely incorporates into his pieces. For instance, when he visited Bali, he saw the coexistence of islanders and myths. “Penumur”, the local musician Ana’s ceremonial invitation to God, deeply resonated with him. Then, while visiting his friend, composer Yuan Leow Yunn at a gamelan studio, he heard her composition of “Flame (Huo Yan)”.

In Journey, Wei Siong tries to address all the big and little aspects of life. In “Good Night (Liang Xiao)”, he learns to appreciate the short but precious time we have; he observes in “Love” that without emotions, the garden of life is just a dead tree; meanwhile, the upbeat “Horse Racing (Sai Ma)” brings his joy to play with a group of friends.

Meeting his best friend Leow Yunn, who also the music director for this show, is instrumental to his musical journey. Wei Siong reflects that his experiences in lifeall made up of the people he has met, things he has seenmake him feel like a galloping, happy horse: always racing to find new ways to fill his life with meaning and purpose.

In this collaboration between soprano Evelyn Toh and jazz pianist Tay Cher Siang, the worlds of jazz and aria collide to celebrate and uncover different facets of womanhood. "la fleur de femme" shows us that fragility, tenacity, and beauty exists in both flowers and feminity.

It is said that a woman is like a flower: beautiful, strong. Though its petals will eventually wither, its sweet fragrance is never forgotten.

There are hundreds of types of flowers, such as the noble peony, the soft jasmine, the delicate rose, the arrogant plum blossoms, each of them with their own meaning and significance.

This is the first jazz/aria collaboration between Evelyn Toh and Malaysian jazz pianist Tay Cher Siang. A beautiful soprano who has had her fair share of performing many roles, Evelyn now takes on the role of being a mother. She recognizes that in life, the parts women play are ever-changing, and with that comes the ability to take on new identities. [la fleur de femme] is her tribute to life and to all women.

The concert [la fleur de femme] archives the many facades of womanhood and a woman’s love. Each song, like a flower carefully plucked by Evelyn, allegorizes the differences of femininity, from a woman’s fiery passion to a mother’s gentle affections.

Presented by the Damansara Performing Arts Center (DPAC), with the Cultural and Economy Development Agency (CENDANA) as its strategic partner, "Creature Trilogy" will be held at DPAC from 17-18 October.

The impact of the pandemic saw the fate of this year's Damansara International Arts Festival uncertain, which disappointed many art lovers. Since the implementation of the RMCO, DPAC has presented performances through live broadcasts and live streams, as well as stage performances to a limited audience.

The performances from July to September have been met with warm reception and a demand for more. This October, DPAC will bring dance-centric “Creature Trilogy” (initially a part of the Damansara International Arts Festival line-up) to the stage. Dance lovers, go ahead and rejoice!

Three choreographers converge for "Creature Trilogy"
Since ancient times, a lot of stock has been put into the biomechanics of dance movement. Flexibility, agility, coordination, and even the explosive force that we witness in a dancer when they are in their element is proof of biomechanics at work.  Each of us has a different definition of “beauty” when it comes to dance. Some might prefer the fluidity of body movements that conform to biomechanics; some might be partial to the startling movements brought on by a violation of these biomechanics.

“Creature Trilogy” sees the return of three renowned choreographers and dancers, Raziman Sarbini, Pexstret Liu Yong Sean, and Suhaili Micheline from the United States, South Korea, and Australia respectively. Each of them have made names for themselves in their countries of base and in their home of Malaysia. Taking lessons learned abroad, they now hope to combine their unique understanding of biomechanics to derive new pieces of work.

“Creature Trilogy” will first feature the solo works by the choreographers, which is then followed by a collaborative piece from all three of them. This triple bill will see an amalgamation of their differences in biomechanics, experience, country, and style that is sure to exceed audience’s expectations.

Solo Piece

The Other Creatures
Choreographed by : Raziman Sarbini
Performed by :Mohammad Khairi Mokthar, Fauzi Amirudin, Kishore Krishnan, Mohamad Azizi Bin Mansor, Ng Xinying

The Other Creatures is a contemporary dance work. It was premier at NYU Tisch Dance during MFA 2 concert in 2019 and it’s a 15 minutes work. This time, Raziman make it in a longer version. The piece inspired by the Snake and Ladders board game, a classic board game in which we have to roll dice to try and reach the finish point faster than our opponent. The aim of the game is to get to the finish square a quick as possible. The game was popular in the ancient India by name Mokha Patam. It also known in Hindu philosophy as karma and kama or destiny and desire. In 1892 the game was introduced to Victorian England and named snake and ladder board game. The game has also been interpreted and used as a tool for teaching the effects of good deeds versus bad. This inspired the choreography and how the metaphor of the game affect to the society that we live in. Some individual believe that karma exist and some don’t. But what Raziman believed that if we do go to people, we will get the same. On top of that, everyone craving to be on the top. Is that mean to have the power to control others or to make world a better place?

Sound of insect is the idea for Raziman to find the vocabulary, as how his body reflect to the sound...

FRIDGE-Sapiens
Choreographed by :Suhaili Micheline
Performed by : Amellia Feroz, Sofia Tengku, Tristen Zijuin, January Low, Gan Ning Xuan
' For the things forgotten often left rotten, you make the most from what you can take. For the Needs of you kept afresh, if not noticed be frozen in time..'

Forgot to wear a hat and accidently got onto Cinderella’s thief ship,
The snowy summer made me fall in love with the thorns of the rose,
I planted seeds everywhere and I stopped to listen it,
Do I let him free love

The Other Story of Ah-Q 《阿Q外傳》

presented by Pentas Project Theatre Production

In collaboration with THE JAPAN FOUNDATION ASIA CENTER, and DPAC

Supported by PURPLE CANE, CLOUD THEATRE.

Staged reading - a traditional preparation for the stage.

Staged reading - also a show where incompleteness meets imagination.

Challenging incomplete stage/costumes/set, imaginatively,

7 actors perform 20 roles - barefaced for the audience.

The Japanese playwright, Ken Miyamoto’s work, “The Other Story of Ah-Q” is inspired by Lu Xun’s classical short story collection, “Call to Arms” and is based on “The Story of Ah-Q”.

It all starts with Ah Q, and it all ends with Ah Q. A failed hero - a revolutionary thief; life-saving medicine - a killing knife. Triggering Ah Q’s self-mockery and inferiority, dissecting a feudal decay fighting its dying moments. Bursting the self-proclaimed revolutionary’s passion or apathy, mincing the commoner’s good and evil.Life’s loathings, ridicules, pities, laments, which have always come from a never despairing expectation.

Synopsis :

他將魯迅筆下許多經典人物,如:阿Q(一個卑微的愚人,也是自暴自棄自我安慰精神勝利法的符號),放上舞台與魯迅和其所在的動盪時空,交織在一起對話。

Ken Miyamoto - born during World War II and having spent his youth in Beijing - deconstructed and reconstructed Lu Xun’s beliefs to write “The Other Story of Ah Q” in the late sixties using his expert style of depicting revolutions and social relationships. He gathered many of Lu Xun’s classic characters to dialogue on stage, sharing the space with Lu Xun and the tumultuous times they belonged to. Through these characters of different statuses, the story examined what a social revolution could bring: the dilemmas, the rage, the grief. “To the people, what exactly is a revolution? To the revolution, what exactly are the people?” Must one fail to become a hero? Can medicine save, and yet borrow a knife to kill?

presented by Lu Wit Chin & James Kan

“It all started back in 2004, when we first dance together, if not NOW… when will it be?”

N/2 is the much-anticipated double bills dance performance by James Kan and Lu who are no longer unfamiliar for their respective full-length solo dance performance.

James and Lu are now seeking for the new perspective under the new-norms as handling the both choreography and performer. The duos are driven to make the double bills as they first started dancing together 16 years ago.
