CONCERT PIERROT LUMIÈRE

A Multimedia Sound Performances by Manufaktur für aktuelle Musik & Warped Type (Visuals)

Presented by: Goethe Institut and DPAC

More than a hundred years later, the question who this Pierrot Lunaire, central figure of the work, actually was still lingers: A romantic, a lunatic? A man, a woman? A real person or just a projection? The German ensemble’s contemporary version of the Pierrot focuses on the ambivalence of the figure – in their rich stage performance the musicians follow the Pierrot through a network of different virtual spaces created by the video installation: uninhabited nature and urbanity, transit zones, open spaces and narrow alleys let the sceneries of the original story come to life.

Inspired by the radical new musical language Schönberg’s compositions unfolded in the beginning of the 20th century, MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik infuse their classical performance with electronic elements, building bridges to contemporary sounds and music styles.

About MAM

MAM. manufaktur für aktuelle musik was founded by International Ensemble Modern Academy scholarship holders in 2010, in response to a common passion for new forms of expression and performance in the music of today. The musicians see themselves as a liberal and internationally positioned collective, one that extends the idea of an ensemble through interdisciplinary engagement, bringing to life new sounds and sound concepts.

MAM works with composers such as Mark Andre, Georges Aperghis, Hans-Joachim Hespos, Robin Hoffmann, Neele Hülcker, Jagoda Szmytka and Simon Steen-Andersen, and maintains a performance schedule at festivals such as Eclat in Stuttgart, the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, AchtBrücken Festival and New Talents Biennale in Cologne, Mixtur Festival in Barcelona, Klangwerkstatt Berlin, pgnm Festival Bremen, klub katarakt festival Hamburg, Schönes Wochenende at Tonhalle Düsseldorf and ZKM Karlsruhe.

In 2012 the MAM musicians recorded Mauricio Kagel’s Exotica for DVD (Ensemble Modern Media) and in 2015, a CD of new works by Ying Wang for Wergo.

In addition to the cultivation of contemporary repertoire, the musicians are committed to the upkeep and extension of alternative and/or experimental playing techniques at the nexus of performance, improvisation and the interpretation of composed music. MAM is a place of experimentation, boundary crossing and improbable confluences.

GOLD RAIN & HAILSTONES
presented by The Instant Café Theatre Company

Gold Rain and Hailstones is a Malaysian classic by acclaimed playwright Jit Murad. It was first staged to critical acclaim in 1993, hailed as the best play of the year, moving audiences to laughter and then tears. This is the opening production to mark Instant Café’s 30th Anniversary.

Gold rain in another country. Hailstones in your country. Better hailstones at home

Sharifah Amani, Redza Minhat, Ghafir Akbar and Farah Rani star in a timely revival of a modern Malaysian classic.

Outspoken and liberal Amy had always felt like a mutant back in Malaysia. So when her best friends Nina, Jay and Man returned home after studying abroad Amy stayed on. But now Amy’s beloved Bapak is dying and she hurries home. Amy’s homecoming causes chaos as she annoys, infuriates and exasperates her old friends. As she reconnects with them, Amy soon discovers she is not the only one struggling to belong. Successful 'Melayu Baru' Man, feisty upper-class wife and mother Nina and fabulous celebrity make-up and beauty guru Jay have all made difficult choices and compromises to belong in their own country. But can they accept each other’s Malaysia? And can they learn to love the hailstones?

Gold Rain and Hailstones by Jit Murad is a hilarious and often poignant tale of home, identity, friendship and family.

Directed by Gavin Yap

Women's Adventure Film Tour 18/19
presented by Cosmiques Films

Celebrating the extraordinary things women are doing in the name of adventure.

Come and celebrate International Women’s Day with 12 of the best new short films featuring the most adventurous women on earth!

1. Hayley
Before walking a 52 meter highline at 2800 altitude in midst winter, I asked Hayley about fear. She replied with her favorite quote from Frank Herbert’s “Dune”. A short film about Hayley Ashburn, filmed in the Torri del Vajolet, set to the hypnotizing soundtrack Tristana by Nils Frahm.

2. Mothered by Mountains
Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita, Nepal’s leading female mountain guide, has been on top of the tallest peaks on Earth. When she teams up to make a first ascent with an unlikely partner – local punk-rock icon, Sareena Rai – they both find that the paths to the greatest summits lie within.

3. Persian Powder
Take a cultural journey with us as we profile professional snowboarder, Mona Seraji, plying her trade in her home mountains of Iran. Haunting music accompanies this unique glimpse into a little-known, winter playground for skiers and sliders alike.

4. Trial and Error
The sport of trials riding isn’t an easy one; it takes hard work and commitment, not to mention a large amount of skill. Janine will take you on a journey and show you how trials riding allows her to explore and enjoy the outdoors and spectacular locations that Queensland has to offer.

5.The Ascent
The Ascent is a documentary short following Alyssa Azar in the lead up to her third attempt to become the youngest Australian ever to summit Everest.

6. Why Not Now

At the age of 49, blind and afraid of water, Vivian Stancil dove in to save her life.

7. Nemesis

As a highly accomplished rock climber, Monique Forestier has completed some very difficult climbs around the world and along the way she became the first Australian woman to climb routes graded 31, 32, 33 and 34. To put that into perspective, the top grade climbed by an Australian male is 35. NEMESIS shows the determination and perseverance required to succeed at the top end of rock climbing on a project that pushed Monique to her limit.

8. Discovering Adventure
Discovering Adventure is a film project documenting a 5-year old girl, Isabelle, traveling with her family to Norway on her biggest adventure yet. Along the way she’s learning the skills to be an explorer and adventurer, but most importantly she’s learning about herself. With her father Tim who’s also a professional paragliding pilot, and down-to-earth mom, Maile, the family set sail into the Arctic Circle in search of a winter wonderland to sail, fly, camp, ski and explore together. Isabelle’s love of adventure has already taken her all over the world sailing in Croatia, tandem wake boarding in California, paragliding in France and winter Sky Camping above Europe’s highest ski station, Val Thorens. Who know where she will go next. Join the Green family as they continue to discovering adventure together!

9. Threads from Mongolia
Threads from Mongolia follows thirteen women as they explore Western Mongolia. Encounters with eagle hunters, ancient petroglyphs and a glimpse into the lives of nomadic families, Threads from Mongolia weaves female camaraderie, poetry by Claire Carter and music from local performers into a beautiful love letter to a wild place.

10. Breaking the Cycle: Greenland

Australian expedition cyclist Dr. Kate Leeming travels through Northeast Greenland to test a custom made Christini all-wheel-drive fat bike in polar conditions. Kate aims to make the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole.

11. Taranaki
Janina Kuzma, Anna Segal and Evelina Nilsson travel to the North Island of New Zealand with a goal to summit and ski all four skiable volcanic peaks in the region. The original objectives become out of reach due to foul conditions, but as the weather window shrinks, Mt Taranaki only expands in their minds – not just a land mass, but a mountain with a temperament and soul.

12. 3 Women and 3 Old Men
‘Three women and the three old men’ is a story of three women’s journey to climb three of Scotland’s remote sea stacks in just three days to raise money for a local charity who provide opportunities for disadvantaged youths in climbing.

Date / Time:

The Story of Cyrano de Bergerac
presented by Le French Festival & KL Shakespeare Players

supported by Alliance Française KL, Embassy of France in Malaysia

Paris, 1640. Never shying away from blood or fools, full of panache and a smooth talker, skilled swordsman yet soulful poet Cyrano de Bergerac is not so daring when it comes to love, as the shockingly large nose defiling his face prevents him from courting the beautiful Roxane, the love of his life.

For the first time in its history, Le French Festival partners with KL Shakespeare Players -one of Malaysia’s greatest theatre companies - to produce The Story of Cyrano de Bergerac, a French theatrical masterpiece written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand.

KLSP’s unique French-Malaysian version of Cyrano is bound to sweep the audience off their feet and take them on a lyrical journey like no other, performing key scenes of this classical play in contemporary English with a hint of French.

THE MAY 9 SHOW

As the country celebrates, debates and bemoans the anniversary of May 9th Instant Café asks

WHO WANTS TO MAKE MALAYSIA GREAT AGAIN?

To find out, join YBeeee & Curry Spice live with host Sean Ghazi on
Instant Café Night Live – the Talk Show we all actually want to see in Malaysia Baru.

Instant Cafe Breaking News In Your Face.

Exactly one year ago Malaysia made history by voting out the old and, well, voting in the even older. Hooray! And exactly one year later Malaysia will see history being made again: It’s a brand new Instant Cafe Show! That’s right, Instant Cafe is back to answer today’s burning questions like, why do we still have a Sedition Act, why persecute women for marching, where did I put my glasses, I mean, they were right here, and does this curry taste “fishy” to you as well?

The Talk Show Everyone Is Talking About

Yes, Instant Cafe is back with its very own “It’s Never Too Late, Late Talk Show” with the host, Malaysia’s West End singing sensation SEAN GHAZI and two very special guests:

He’s Malaysian Official 63, he may have lost the last election but he didn’t lose HIS equanimity, he’ll dress up as a dog and attack his own lawyer if he has to, he’s the only former Deputy Minister whose name you can still remember: He’s YBeeee! And he wants to Make Malaysia Great For Him Again (MMGFHA) #smallbossku.

AND

She’s the only member of her own girl band “The Asian Spice Girls”, she’s the star of “Keeping Up With The Coomarasamys”, she spent two weeks in London so she’s all, like, “in your face” and “know what I mean” and she plans to be the next Prime Minister of Malaysia. That’s right, she’s the bi-sexual, bi-pedal, bi-nocular woman from Sentul – Curry Spice! #inikarilah #innit

ALSO

You won’t want to miss the Surprise Celebrity Mystery Guests* AND the celebrity Guest Singers!

So be sure to join velvety smooth Sean Ghazi and his Special Guests as they look at Malaysia’s triumphs, the glories, the heartaches and the comedy, as well as asking the question, when was the last time you said Malaysia Baru?

Created by Jo Kukathas with Kam Raslan, Na’a Murad, Zalfian Fuzi and Sean Ghazi

Featuring Jo Kukathas, Sean Ghazi, Guest Singers and Surprise Celebrity Mystery Guests*

*Different Surprise Celebrity Mystery Guests will appear every night – ranging from politicians to civil society leaders. A detailed calendar will be out soon.

POTICHE
presented by Kopi Théâtre

Attention: The show is in French subtitled in English

It's 1977, Suzanne Pujol, is a player in the local high society, and the wife of a public figure who runs her life. Having been entrusted with the operation of his late father-in-law's business, her husband is as autocratic with his family as he is with the workers of the umbrella factory Suzanne inherited. Becoming the victim of a health problem, he is ordered to absolute home confinement and Suzanne is forced to take on the role of acting head of the company, a responsibility she does not welcome, and that will in time, reveal her true personality.... The play was a huge success from the Premiere in 1980 and was played for over 5 years in France before being adapted in the United States under the title "A Little Family Business" and played in Los Angeles and New York in 1984. In 2010, François Ozon made a very freely adapted cinematographic version, with Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Fabrice Lucchini and Karine Viard. The Kopi Théâtre amateur troop, made up of French expatriates in KL, aims to make you laugh at their presentation of 'Potiche'. Reviving the comical style of the original authors and the groovy style of 1977, together with social issues that are again, relevant and current in 2018, 'Potiche' promises an evening of laughs and retro style to everyone.

Once upon a time, there were two brilliant generals- General Choi, and General Wong. They contributed a lot to the country; and so, the Emperor granted East Coast to General Choi, and gifted West Coast to General Wong. Not long after, the Emperor passed away; and so, the Generals. General Choi has two sons and a daughter while General Wong owns 3 daughters. They possess a splendid martial art. Two families live harmoniously in peace- until heat and drought in East Coast continued for years, causing starve and death to its people. Without any resort, East Coast seeks help from West Coast, hoping that they could supply them water, but West Coast rejects. Feeling helpless, East Coast decides to invade West Coast. Without waiting for another second, West Coast defenses. While the parties are locked in fight, the Government learns about the war. The Government decides to build a dam in East Coast to save its people, and sends Great General to the battlefield to stop the war. The Great General also urges both parties to not solve conflicts with force, so that the country stays prosperous and its people are at peace.

presented by PAUL WAH CHEW

Perseverance is the power of beauty.

After 30 years of taking a lonely road of music, there is now a river of time filled with urgency—a counter-current that is silently coming, singing a song of its own elegant form.

Now, 30 years later, she is using the experiences of those days to sing about life, stories that float in the wind—some memories, some born of out sentimentality, some comprising the ups and down of life.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Paul Wah Chew appeared in the Chinese music scene as the first female singer-song writer, surging the local creation and opening up a new direction for emerging singer-songwriters.

B.OOM! INTERNATIONAL DANCE SHOWCASE

presented by B.DANCE

organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia

Brought to you by an ensemble of world-class award-winning choreographer and performers.

“Providing a new mode of thinking, making dance art the language of the world in a positive and positive way.”

A world-class performance that has been recognized across borders and has won numerous awards. Choreographer PO-CHENG TSAI was inspired by new works “Hugin/Munin”, with two crows “Spirit” and “Thinking” as imageries of Nordic mythology, in various international competitions. The independent choreographer and dancers created a new piece of work - B.OOM by B.DANCE to challenge the audience's vision. With the dance, the international independent choreographers can understand Asia in a new way and the beauty they feel from each other. To be a bomb that detonates, influences, and infects more viewers.

With the cross-border environment of performing arts today, the possibilities of dance creation knows no bounds.

ABOUT B.DANCE

Since the establishment of B.DANCE, they have performed in Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, Israel, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, France, China, Hong Kong, among others, and been recognized by a number of international competitions and well-known dance companies.

MEDIA REVIEW

“One became two during Mr. Tsai’s “Floating Flowers,” in which the diminutive Garazi Perez Oloriz grows into a careening giant. Maurus Gauthier, hidden under Ms. Oloriz’s tulle skirt, forms her lower half, before they divide and conquer the space side by side.”

Dance Workshops

Unleash the original power of the body

The workshop of Andrea will be divided in two parts. In the first part we will work on movement quality through an improvisation based class. We will explore dance trying to get closer to the animal inside of us, to the creature that enjoys moving because of the pleasure and the sensation that he gets out of it. The class will last one hour and 15 minutes and it will consist in a series of instructions directly demonstrated by the choreographer. After that we will continue our exploration through the learning of choreographic material from the repertoire of Andrea. The use of phrases and choreography will be an ulterior way to apply what we found in the first part of the workshop and apply it to a form or to an organisation of steps. The second part will last one hour and thirty minutes.

DIAF '19 : BLANK

DPAC, in association with Aurora Nova, and in collaboration with The Instant Café Theatre Company, presents BLANK

by Nassim Soleimanpour (Iran)

curated by Jo Kukathas

No set. No director. A story open to the public and completed by the audience.

A story machine to create new stories every night. Come join us and help us fill in the Blanks.

Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour made a name for himself with his play White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, which has been performed by actors such as Whoopi Goldberg, Alan Cumming, and John Hurt. In 2016 The Instant Café Theatre Company staged it in Malaysia in 3 languages using actors such as Sharifah Amani, Kuah Jenhan, Iedil Putra, Ghafir Akbar, and Ling Tang.

BLANK — performance curated in Kuala Lumpur by JO KUKATHAS with different performers every night. Every night a different performer is the storyteller and a member of the audience becomes the character, deciding what they want to tell us of their life. The performer will also read from a script he or she has never seen — let alone rehearsed. Some words in that script are, as the title of the play suggests, left blank for the actor and the audience to fill in. And so a new story is created collaboratively and immediately in the theatre every night.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

NASSIM SOLEIMANPOUR is an independent multidisciplinary theatre-maker from Tehran, Iran. His plays have been translated into 20 languages. Best known for his play White Rabbit Red Rabbit, written to travel the world when he couldn’t, his work has been awarded the Dublin Fringe Festival Best New Performance, Summerworks Outstanding New Performance Text Award and The Arches Brick Award (Edinburgh Fringe) as well as picking up nominations for a Total Theatre and Brighton Fringe Pick of Edinburgh Award.

MEDIA REVIEW

“Blank offers a more intimate, touching, and compassionate platform for the participant to consider their own mortality.”

NEXT TO NORMAL -  A Pop Rock Musical
presented by PAN Productions

Next to Normal, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as "one of the year's ten best shows" by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American family. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love, sympathy and heart.

This deeply moving piece of theatre showcase vocal talents with an energetic pop/rock score. Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse that addresses such issues as grieving a loss, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life.

DIAF '19 : THE STRANGERS

presented by The Goethe-Institut Malaysia and The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur

Dance-theatre production for young audiences.

A cross-country theatre and dance performance that cannot be missed this year! An experience that will extend to even non-dance lovers.

The Strangers production team brings together internationally-renowned Eastern and Western artists. The dancers' lineup are all from the strong South-Eastern countries, which are Japan, Malaysia, Korea, and Thailand. By inviting the famous Argentinean director LEANDRO KEES and dramaturg JULIA HEßE, they smear a touch of Western color onto the fabric of rich, oriental culture.

This production addresses the questions of identity, belonging, trust, and marginalization. The representation of feelings and beliefs in this performance aims at encouraging the audience to broaden their own horizons and to think about what we all have in common.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR & DRAMATURG

Director LEANDRO KEES’ works have toured in more than 20 countries – often in collaboration with the Goethe Institut – and been presented at venues such as the Sydney Opera House and Sadler’s Wells in London. He specializes in non-fictional performance, staging philosophical and political questions of global relevance.

Dramaturg JULIA HEßE has worked in dramaturgy and public relations at the Theater Oberhausen, before moving to Schnawwl, children's and youth theater at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 2008 as dramaturge. Since November 2015 she is a member on the board of the German ASSITEJ.

PERFORMERS: Sang-hun Lee (Korea); Ying Yun Chen (Taiwan); James Kan (Malaysia); Kanako Ihara (Japan)

By organising The 4th Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Schools Dance Exchange: Let’s Dance! The Sel & KL Kwang Tung Association Youth Section offers children the opportunity to perform in a professional theatre instead of the usual school halls. With this, we hope the children would gain valuable experiences and that the seeds of the arts will be planted, towards building a community that loves art and culture. SPECTRUM'19: KELUNAN by LAN E TUYANG Venue: Theatre, DPAC
Date / Time:

KELUNAN
presented by LAN E TUYANG

KELUNAN means "People" in the Kenyah and Kayan language. This ambitious joint showcase of Kayan and Kenyah people and culture explores the universal theme of love through a multidisciplinary performance deeply rooted in tradition. Experience age-old poetic singing-storytelling, to dances, to live music and sounds from traditional instruments. The cast consists of cross generational Kayan and Kenyah cultural practitioners including Mathew Ngau Jau (Kenyah), Malaysia's Living National Heritage and Adrian Jo Milang (Kayan), youngest practitioner of the oral tradition Parap and Takna'. This show is produced by The Tuyang Initiative, an arts management social enterprise in the area of Dayak (Borneo indigenous) cultural heritage.

About the Performers

MATHEW NGAU JAU

Mathew is a Sape’ Master with more than 30 years experience. He is a Kenyah Ngorek from Long Semiyang (Sarawak) who not only performs the Sape’, he also takes pride in crafting the instrument. He is acknowledged by the community as the keeper of the Ngorek songs, and an authority on the instrument. He is also a fine artist, who dances and practices the art of the blowpipe. Due to Mathew’s experience on international stages, he also works in creative direction and training of younger traditional musicians and Sape’ makers. In 2015, Mathew was proclaimed a Living National Heritage by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Malaysia.

LAN E TUYANG

Lan e Tuyang started as a duo by Mathew Ngau Jau (Sape’ Master and Malaysia’s Living National Heritage) and his late uncle, Uchau Bilung. The duo has performed in many international concerts all around the world. In 2009, Uchau Bilong passed away and the group continued under the leadership of Mathew. Lan e Tuyang is now a fluid, traditional Orang Ulu performance troupe with Sape’ music at its core. In 2009, they debuted a new format featuring three Sape’ players and one percussionist at the 2009 Rainforest World Music Festival. In 2017, they performed with a traditional nose-flute performer, Luyoh Rawing and Mathew’s Sape student, Alena Murang. For Spectrum, expect a new host of community performers including Adrian Jo Milang (youngest practitioner of the oral tradition of the Kayan, Parap & Takna’) in a first time format.

THE TUYANG INITIATIVE

The Tuyang Initiative is a social enterprise and arts management company, focused in the area of Dayak cultural heritage. Spearheaded by highly experienced members from the community, it aims to provide sustainable economic opportunities to rural Dayak communities through arts & culture in innovative development and promotion of its community talents, products and services. With that, It hopes to simultaneously encourage the preservation and continued practice of its traditions and cultures.

Date / Time:

MIX BILL
presented by KENNY SHIM

A performance of four (4) contemporary dance works; by Kenny Shim & Collective and Möbius Dance (U.K.) Artistic Direction by Gianluca Vincentini.

Möbius Dance will present an energetic, passionate and highly physical performance featuring two robust contemporary dance works bringing together two generations of choreographers Jamaal Burkmar and Douglas Thorpe.

Time Moves Slow by Jamaal Burkmar is seen through 4 different perspectives, inspired by 4 different songs, acknowledging 4 different heroes tasked with the climbing the same mountain and overcoming the same challenge, embracing the choice to do it together rather than alone.

Dramatis Personae by Douglas Thorpe highlights the meeting of contrasting personalities leads to weird
and wonderful, occasionally awkward behaviour. Sometimes we have to put on a brave face to get along with each other.

Based on Alain de Button's acclaimed book 'The Course of Love', Kenny Shim & Collective explores the human intricacies in a thought provoking dance work entitled Shades of Shadow, that challenges and reflects the nature of human relationships.

The fourth dance piece is a collaborative work between dancers from Malaysia and U.K. co-choreographed by Gianluca Vincentini and Kenny Shim entitled Human

Besides presenting works of international standards, this project continues to nurture and build creative networking between local and international artists to further elevate the contemporary dance practice.

Music of Words

presented by WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble

WVC JAZZ: WVC, Malaysia’s premier jazz ensemble, returns with a series of concerts entitled Music In Words. The show, spanning a series of five concerts over three nights, will feature a unique collection of WVC’s exhaustive repertoire each day.

On August 23rd, WVC presents their first ballad and love song concert, featuring new compositions, new arrangements, and also some of the favourites WVC has come to be known by. Featuring Chong KeatAun and Izen Kong.

August 24 will feature the return of a pioneer project by WVC, Listen to the Wind Sing: Murakami and Jazz. This show will include original works composed by bandleader Tay Cher Siang, drawing inspiration from his avid connection with Murakami’s works since being a teenager. The show will also feature WVC’s interpretation of some of the music Murakami himself quotes and draws inspiration from in his works.

The show will begin with an 11am movie screening of the film Burning, a South Korean psychological drama inspired by one of Murakami’s short stories from The Elephant Vanishes. Burning was the first Korean movie to make it to the 91st Academy Awards shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film and has garnered attention in film festivals all over the world.

Later in the day WVC will take the stage with their music with accompanying narration by Ye Hui, translator and researcher of Murakami's works.  This Chinese language version showcasing will be at 3pm, and an English counterpart at 8pm, featuring reading and narrations by Gareth Richards and Bettina Chuah Abdullah of Gerakbudaya and Hikayat.

Then on August 25th, WVC once again presents yet another pioneering project entitled If Music be the Food of Love, Jazz On! In 2016, on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, WVC embarked on a journey to create a swathe of musical works inspired by the bard. Putting music to sonnets, creating music inspired by evocative scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, WVC staged a highly acclaimed show in KLPAC and is set to bring this series of music to the stage once more.

Joining them are Lim Soon Heng of Shakespeare Demystified, and Aaron Teoh who is taking a break from his stint with the London production of The King and I.

MATAHARI JANGAN TIDURE
presented by Theatresauce

The hum of a broken television. An inevitable speech. The last ray of sunlight. Kiamat?

Set in maybe Malaysia, Matahari Jangan Tidure, Nanti Hilang Belang gazes upon a family seeking normalcy in the aftermath of a cataclysmic event. In their newly distorted world, they struggle to piece together the fragmented ideas of nation, religion, and morality that once existed.

A myth for a modern audience, Matahari confronts the transient nature of our existence in a world that refuses to remain still.

Matahari is devised by a multidisciplinary ensemble. It continues director Arief Hamizan’s experimentation with creation and collaboration, following his previous original work, Api, Jangan Lupa Api (2018).

Matahari Jangan Tidure, Nanti Hilang Belang is staged with English surtitles.

Featuring Ali Alasri, Michael Chen, Sandee Chew, Milo Faeqo, Claudia Low, Hana Nadira, Visshnu Varman, Ng Hwee Yun, and Nabil Zakaria. WHIMSICAL WORLDS
presented by Sandance Ballet Studio

‘Whimsical Worlds’ explores several extraordinary worlds through dance. Amongst these whimsical places is the exotic land of Ancient Egypt, where the dancers will perform Marius Petipa’s choreography to the music by Cesare Pugni from “La Fille du Pharaon”. They will then dive into the sea and dance with the creatures of the “Underwater Kingdom”.

Then to commemorate our 62nd year of independence in Malaysia, the dancers will fuse their ballet training with the richness and diversity of Malaysian culture and music.

Little children always believe in a world that is ‘just whimsical’ and filled with hope and happiness.
Here the dancers will take on a lyrical feel and let the words from the songs and the rhythm of the music lead their movements.

We will end in a strange realm, here the dancers will take on capricious forms and transform themselves to the music from “The Greatest Showman”.

CONSTELLATIONS
presented by Rabbit Hole Productions

Rabbit Hole Productions proudly presents the Malaysian debut of Constellations by Nick Payne.

Marianne, a physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper, meet at a party.
They hit it off, and go for a drink. Or perhaps they don’t.
They go home together, or maybe they go their separate ways.
Perhaps Marianne is engaged to someone else, perhaps Roland is.
Maybe she breaks his heart, maybe he breaks hers.
Perhaps they come together and their love story can finally take root and grow,
Or perhaps it will be tragically cut short.

Nick Payne's Constellations has been described by the New York Times as the most sophisticated date play Broadway as ever seen. In 75 minutes, the play deftly explores how even the smallest change in our lives can dramatically alter the course we take. It is a spellbinding exploration of love, science, quantum multiverse theory, and infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope.

The play contains strong language and mature themes, audience discretion is advised.

Asha a second generation Indian diaspora born in Malaysia finds herself unable to conform to her cultural setting to be the dutiful daughter. Upon realizing the lack of access to the kind of education she prefers, Asha persuades her parents to send her to study in Australia in the 1970s.

Her introduction to her new found freedom meant reconciling her cultural values but she falls further into the rabbit hole seeking a life with a foreign man.
This uncomfortable choice to settle in Australia, choosing art as her career and forming an uncanny liaison with Alice in Wonderland is unfolded as a contemporary performance piece base on the Kawaad device for storytelling.

《众鼓歌 2.0》 [Laguku 2.0]
presented by ORANG ORANG DRUM THEATRE

“My life is a symphony. I thought I was the solo conductor.”

People. Cars. Buildings.

Crowded. Congested. Crammed. Light. Darkness.

Unfocused light. Focused darkness.

City, chaos, an unending grand symphony. Everyone is a conductor, directing his own melodic destiny. Some follow exactly the music score, some are lost in the notes. Some can’t find the score, some don’t even care about the score.

Are you the only conductor in your symphony of destiny?

‘Laguku 2.0’ is Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s 5th production. Maintaining percussion as the main ingredient and incorporating different elements, this piece turns the observations and attitudes in life into a feast for the ears and eyes. It has been four years since the last ‘Laguku’, and this new piece continues to capture the hidden loneliness in the chaos of the prosperous city, releasing it in a cacophony of rawness.

Armed with more creativity and energy, Orang Orang blends the everyday life of the grassroots of the society into the framework of the symphony, sometimes keeping in step, sometime completely throwing all structure out of the window, as is the life in this city.

Date / Time:

Diabolution 0.1
presented by DiAbolution Production

Produced by DiAbolution Production's founder and artistic director, Ryn Mah, we will be having 3 Malaysia's first local diabolo theatre production ‘DiAbolution 0.1’ at Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) on 26th-27th October 2019. Through diabolo performance, the audience will understand more about the history of Malaysia's diabolo development, as well as the persistence and perseverance of diabolo artists. Whether you are passionate or interested in the culture of diabolo, or if you are interested in theatrical performances, DiAbolution Production sincerely invites you to come and enjoy the visual feast full of surprises and astonishing senses, support and witness the hard works of ours.

DiAbolution Production is one of the new rise diabolo troupe in Malaysia, aiming to promote diabolo cultural and performing art, founder Ryn Mah has reached a much wider audience in just a few years by leading his team to join various national and international activities, mainly with diabolo performances.

This production's Chinese name 'Ling . Yi' means diabolo and art. This name contains the development of the traditional cultural art of diabolo in Malaysia, and at the same time it takes the homophonic of the Chinese word “zero • one”, with an implied meaning of new breakthroughs and innovative developments in the diabolo circle.

Diabolo has been introduced to Malaysia 20 years ago, and it has been a publicly recognized sport and performance. ‘DiAbolution 0.1’ revolves around the relationship between Malaysian diabolo artist and diabolo. In addition to the traditional diabolo performance, we incorporate modern elements and more possibilities towards diabolo performance. At the same time, the audience is lead into a theatre world with diabolo as the main axis with some superb diabolo techniques combined. It will be a bold attempt for DiAbolution, but we are confident that this will be a visual feast full of surprises and astonishing senses.

‘DiAbolution 0.1’ is made up of 4 chapters, which are ’Retrospect‘, ’Insistence‘, ‘Bizarre’ and ‘Virtuosic’. The second word in each chapter's Chinese name shares the same pronunciation as the Chinese word "Art". The message that we would like to bring is the possibility of development and innovation on the basis of diabolo. ‘Retrospect’ is the first chapter of ‘DiAbolution 0.1’, choreographed by artistic director Ryn Mah, bringing audience back to 20 years ago of diabolo history and recalling the memory of traditional diabolo in Malaysia.

The second chapter ‘Insistence’, choreographed by Sze Kien Chun and Lee Ming Jun, presents the persistence and experience of diabolo artists to transcend their own techniques, and sticking to the perseverance and spirit of inheriting the diabolo culture. In this chapter, we also incorporate the elements of percussion, presenting visual performance of diabolo and auditory effects of percussions at the same time.

The third chapter ‘Bizarre’ is choreographed by Tzusheng Conan. In line with the storyline, various life props are integrated into the diabolo performance to let audience realize that diabolo can also be very interesting and lively.

The fourth chapter ‘Virtuosic’, choreographed by Ling Zhi Xian and Soon Yong Wei, combines cheerleading skills and dazzling high-end diabolo techniques, presented in bursts of dazzling tricks, bringing the audience to the climax of the technical diabolo performance.

DAVID GLASS'S TEMPEST
presented by DGE & KLSP

Following its successful premiere at penangpac and klpac, David Glass's TEMPEST brings its magic to DPAC. David Glass--one of the founders and initiators of the Physical/Visual, Devised and Applied Theatre movements--turns Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST into a visual, physical and musical celebration. He transforms the key characters, settings and themes in the original play into his own unique version that highlights some contemporary issues such as global warming and self-identity. While the themes and ideas of Hope, Creativity, Knowledge, Love Wisdom and Redemption in Shakespeare's version continue to resonate.

Set in the last days of humanity, this production tells the story of Prospero--an alchemist and shaman who holds the world’s knowledge in his beloved books. He has an adolescent daughter Miranda whom he protects and shelters. She lives an idyllic life believing that her father and the island creatures--Caliban and Ariel--are the only inhabitants of the destroyed Earth. Until she encounters other human beings. These coincidentally are Prospero’s usurpers on their way to harness power to consolidate their position in a dying world.

The cast is made of veteran actors Lim Soon Heng, Seng Soo Ming, Lim Kien Lee and Foo Chi Wei, and new but talented actors Nikki Basharudin, Teoh Jun Vinh, and Zul Zamir.

Que No Daría Yo
presented by Ballet Flamenco Maria Carrasco

Organized By                : Embassy of Spain in Malaysia

In Collaboration With    : Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC)

Woman cries,
Memories of a life.
Represents each day
the dance of the silence.
And in off singings
she tears inside.

The flamenco is an expressive art form, conveying feelings and stories through swings and kicks and lively music.

Que No Daría Yo (What Would I Not Give), a showcase of the flamenco, dances the deepest of women’s emotions.

In this performance, Maria will present a fusion of power, passion, depth, art, feeling, music, and magic in this new style of dance while infusing flamenco elements.

Once again, she will bring you into an emotional world for a personal experience with Flamenco.

In addition to the exquisite flamenco performance, Maria will lead a master class at DPAC. Whether you love her work or flamenco dance, this will be the perfect chance for you to get up close with this Spanish cultural art form.

OEDIPUS
presented by Faculty of Film, Theatre and Animation (FiTA) in collaboration with DPAC

Oedipus, in Greek mythology, the king of Thebes who unwittingly killed his father and married his mother. Homer related that Oedipus’s wife and mother hanged herself when the truth of their relationship became known, though Oedipus apparently continued to rule at Thebes until his death. In the post-Homeric tradition, most familiar from Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex (or Oedipus the King) and Oedipus at Colonus, there are notable differences in emphasis and detail.

Norzizi Zulkifli has created an amalgamation of Malay and Minang culture in this play, where elements such as Malay Percussions (kompang) and Randai are utilized to offer a different presentation. This play is an alternate version for Malaysian theatregoers, as a way to relate to the aforesaid Greek classic. Oedipus will be performed by the FiTA Theatre Ensemble, Faculty Film Theatre and Animations on the 29th of November until 1st of December.
